Marine Aquaculture Production Growing 8% per Year

Each year NOAA Fisheries compiles key fisheries and aquaculture statistics from the previous year into an annual snapshot documenting the importance of fishing and aquaculture to the nation.

U.S. aquatic farmers produced 594 million pounds of seafood in 2012 valued at $1.2B, according to Fisheries of the United States (FUS) 2013, released by NOAA yesterday.  U.S. marine aquaculture production grew at an average of 8% per year from 2007-2012, mostly due to gains in marine shellfish production. The value of total U.S. aquaculture production now equals about 20% of the value of the U.S. commercial wild catch. 

The top U.S. marine aquaculture species are Atlantic salmon ($77 million), oysters ($136 million) and clams ($99 million). While thriving shellfish industries can be found in all coastal regions of the United States, the Pacific Coast states produce the most shellfish ($108.5 million).

 “The marine aquaculture sector is an important source of jobs and business opportunities and is a key to our future seafood supply “ said Michael Rubino, Director of the NOAA Fisheries Office Aquaculture. “The growth trend in domestic marine aquaculture production in the last few years is an encouraging sign that marine aquaculture is increasingly accepted as a source of high quality seafood. It's being recognized for its role in creating economic opportunities in coastal communities as a complement to commercial fishing.”

The mission of the NOAA Fisheries Office of Aquaculture is to foster sustainable marine aquaculture in the United States. NOAA works with partners to streamline aquaculture permitting, refine aquaculture methods and technologies, develop science products that improve our understanding of the environmental effects of marine aquaculture, and provide grant opportunities.
