red tide species is deadlier than first thought

Gary Wikfors of the NEFSC Milford Laboratory in Connecticut was co-advisor with Dr. Dam of Dr. Flores's post-doc, which was funded by a NOAA Oceans and Human Health grant, titled I-RICH (http://www.i-rich.uconn.edu/) and a collaboration among the University of Connecticut Department of Marine Sciences, the Mystic Aquarium, and the Milford Lab.  Previous research at the Milford lab had demonstrated effects of harmful algae upon shellfish blood cells that appeared unrelated to known neurotoxins, but did seem to be associated somehow with oxidative stress.  These observations led to the questions addressed in Dr. Flores's research.
