Shawn Murakawa retrieving a dead juvenile Kemp's ridley, aboard a vessel that was recovered floating off of the Gulf Coast of Mississippi during the Deepwater Horizon response in 2010. The orange "X" was painted on the turtle the day before to signify that it was recorded for the daily count and for easier observation when recovering the turtle the next day. During the response, NOAA sent staff from every region to help out. Murakawa is from Hawaii.
