Essential Fish Habitat
NOAA Fisheries, regional Fishery Management Councils, and Federal and state agencies work together to address these threats by identifying Essential Fish Habitat (EFH) for each federally managed fish species and developing conservation measures to protect and enhance these habitats. For more information.

National

  • Atlantic Highly Migratory Species (HMS) Essential Fish Habitat
Description: These datasets identify Essential Fish Habitat (EFH) for Atlantic Highly Migratory Species (Atlantic tunas, swordfish, billfish, and sharks) for the NOAA Fisheries, Highly Migratory Species (HMS) Management Division. For complete text definitions of EFH see the 1999 Fishery Management Plan (FMP) for Atlantic Tunas, Swordfish and Sharks; the 1999 Amendment 1 to the Atlantic Billfish FMP, the 2003 Amendment 1 to the HMS FMP, and the 2006 Consolidated Atlantic Highly Migratory Species Fishery Management Plan. These datasets include all life stages (neonate, juvenile and adult) for five species of sharks (blacktip, sandbar, dusky, nurse and finetooth) updated in the 2003 Draft Amendment 1 to the HMS FMP. These GIS files are available from NOAA Fisheries, HMS Division. For more information, please contact Chris.Rilling@noaa.gov.

Alaska Region
  • Alaska Essential Fish Habitat (EFH)
    Description
: EFH in Alaska is identified in Fishery Management Plans developed by the North Pacific Fishery Management Council and approved by the Secretary of Commerce. EFH descriptions are comprised of text and maps. (If there are differences between the descriptions of EFH in text and maps, the textual description is ultimately determinative of the limits of EFH.) Maps depict the area of EFH for each life stage of fish managed under a Fishery Management Plan within the Gulf of Alaska, Bering Sea, and Aleutian Islands.
