This data represents the depths (20 Fathoms and shallower) within the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands defined as Critical Habitat by the National Marine Fisheries Service (NOAA Fisheries) Pacific Island Regional Office (PIRO). The linework for this layer is based on the nautical charts, bathymetry, and IKONOS estimated depths data collected by PIBHMC, CRED, PIFSC, NOAA, JIMAR and HMRG. The data is in shapefile format and can be included as a map layer in a GIS. This data set is an updated, final version of 'monk_seal_crit_hab'.This layer was created to depict Critical Habitat for Monk Seals in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands (NWHI). The layer represents areas designated for Critical Habitat in the region. It is best suited for mapping those properties in the aforementioned region.Multibeam bathymetry data in the form of 60 meter grids (from PIBHMC, CRED, PIFSC, NOAA, and JIMAR) was used to derive the 20 fathom depth contour using ESRI's Spatial Analyst extension. Interpolation from NOAA nautical chart soundings was used in areas where data was unavailable.
