Phytoplankton form the base of the pelagic food web and perform a critical role in he eastern Bering Sea ecosystem. These primary producers are grazed upon by zooplankton, which are in turn an important food source for juvenile salmon and their prey. We investigate interannual differences in phytoplankton biomass and taxonomic assemblage structure between frontal regions in the eastern Bering Sea, and across latitudinal gradients from the southern to the northern Bering Sea. We relate observed spatial and temporal patterns to water temperature and discuss potential affects of warm vs. cold year regimes on phytoplankton dynamics.
