Fishery Mapper Tool

The EcoGIS project, a joint NMFS/NOS/Fishery Management Council effort, is developing GIS tools to help scientists and managers continue on their path toward an ecosystem approach to fisheries management. One of the first tools developed allows a user to query observer, logbook, or survey data on dates, gears, and species, and summarize those data by both time (weekly, monthly, yearly) and space (regular grid or user-defined polygons such as survey strata). The above image depicts typical output from the Fishery Mapper tool: monthly otter trawl and gillnet fishing effort for seven major groundfish species over a six-month period.
