Cape Flattery Grounding Restoration
In
February 2005, the vessel known as Cape Flattery grounded outside
the channel entrance to Barbers Point Harbor, Oahu, Hawaii. The
grounding impacted over 15 acres of coral habitat.
The
restoration involved securing over 800 corals to 105 cement bases.
The structures were created to 1) prevent “bulldozing”
from detached corals during wave action, 2) restore 3-dimensional
structure as habitat for fish and invertebrates, and 3) provide
opportunity for colony and area recovery in the future.
Restored aggregate sites have been mapped, measured and marked for future monitoring of aggregate stability, survival and coral growth.
