About American Rivers
American Rivers is a national non-profit conservation
organization dedicated to protecting and restoring rivers
nationwide and to fostering a river stewardship ethic.
In addition to protecting nationally significant rivers,
their programs focus on dam removal and other river-related
issues. The Rivers Unplugged campaign supports the removal
of dams that no longer serve a purpose or where costs
outweigh the benefits. Many of these dams block migratory
fish from accessing their historic spawning grounds,
disrupt natural riverine functions, and create safety
hazards. American Rivers staff are involved at the local,
regional, and national levels doing on-the-ground restoration
work and providing resource materials and expertise
to groups pursuing their own restoration projects.
About the Partnership
The NOAA/American Rivers Habitat Restoration partnership
began in 2001. During the first three years of the
partnership, over $1.6 million of NOAA funds were matched
at least 1:1 by American Rivers to conduct migratory
fish passage restoration projects in the Northeast,
Mid-Atlantic, the Northwest, and California. American
Rivers conducts a project solicitation and competitive
selection
process
twice annually. Since 2001, approximately forty fish
passage restoration projects have been funded under
this partnership and are at various stages of implementation.
The partnership continues with the development of a
second three-year partnership in 2004. NOAA CRP staff
and American Rivers jointly provide technical assistance
to project proponents including advice on project design
and engineering, identification of funding match, selection
of contractors, compliance with permitting requirements,
and community engagement.
Request For Proposals
NOAA partners with American Rivers to fund projects
that restore migratory fish habitat through dam removal
and fish passage construction in California, the Northwest,
the Northeast, and Mid-Atlantic regions. Project solicitation
cycles
are scheduled for
April and November. Organizations that have project
ideas are encouraged to contact American Rivers to
discuss
potential projects prior to submitting an application.
