About California CoastKeeper Alliance
The California CoastKeeper Alliance is a coalition
of regional CoastKeeper organizations dedicated to
protecting and restoring the quality of California's
aquatic ecosystems. The California CoastKeeper's mission
is to coordinate efforts between regional Southern/Central
California Keeper organizations on state and regional
issues and to bring these programs together on various
activities including habitat restoration.
About the Partnership
The NOAA/California CoastKeeper Alliance Habitat Restoration
partnership began in 2001. During the first three years
of the partnership, over $600,000 of NOAA funds were
matched 1:1 by California CoastKeeper to implement
the Regional Kelp Restoration Project. The goal of
this effort is to increase the long-term quantity and
quality of the region’s kelp forest. The partnership
supports the expansion of kelp restoration sites and
the development of a new kelp mariculture system to
raise quantities of kelp for transplantation. Local
communities are closely involved in the restoration
efforts, from the growth of kelp plants in classrooms
to the transplantation and science-based monitoring
undertaken by local dive club volunteers. In 2004,
a new 3-year partnership was established to expand
the kelp restoration area, maintain and monitor established
restoration sites, continue the classroom education
program, and expand the volunteer kelp restoration
dive program.
