About Connecticut River Watershed Council
Connecticut River Watershed Council (CRWC) was founded
in 1952 and is the only broad-based citizen advocate
for the environmental well-being of the entire Connecticut
River. Their primary mission is to promote improvement
of water quality and the restoration, conservation,
wise development and use of the natural resources of
the Connecticut River watershed. CRWC works to foster
appreciation, protection and intelligent use of the
irreplaceable natural and man-made resources of the
watershed through information and action.
About the Partnership
The NOAA/Connecticut River Watershed Council Fisheries
Restoration Initiative Partnership began in 2001. During
the three-year partnership, NOAA provided $200,000
that were matched 1:1 by CRWC to restore anadromous
fish habitat in the Connecticut River watershed. Several
projects are in various phases of implementation with
NOAA CRP financial and technical support. Each year,
a variety of riparian and in-stream restoration projects
are developed by CRWC in consultation with the NOAA
CRP staff based on their benefits to anadromous fish
and other migratory species. Local communities, state
and local agencies, and various state task forces also
help to prioritize projects, which include dam removals,
fish ladders and culvert replacements to improve fish
passage.
