About the Gulf of Mexico Foundation
The Gulf of Mexico Foundation is a nonprofit corporation founded by citizens concerned with the health and productivity of the Gulf of Mexico. The foundation represents a wide range of interests–agriculture, business, fisheries, industry, tourism, and environment–and works to promote and fund restoration, research, education and conservation programs. Their focus encompasses areas that border the Gulf, including the five states (Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida), and the US territories in the Caribbean (Puerto Rico and the USVI).
About the Partnership
The first NOAA/Gulf of Mexico Community-based Restoration Partnership was established (between NOAA Fisheries Community-based Restoration Program and the Gulf of Mexico Foundation) in 2001 and emphasized restoration in Gulf Ecological Management Sites (GEMS). During the first three-year partnership, $950,000 of NOAA funds were provided and matched 1:1 by the Gulf of Mexico Foundation to conduct more than 19 restoration projects benefiting critical fisheries habitats. The funds are used to support grass-roots efforts to restore seagrass beds, oyster and coral reefs, marsh and wetland habitats, as well as many other unique and essential fish habitats in the Gulf of Mexico region. These efforts are essential to the life cycles of living marine resources and essential to improve the health and productivity of the Gulf of Mexico. A second three-year partnership was established in 2004, and the reach of the program was expanded into the US territories in the Caribbean. A third three-year partnership began in 2007. In all, NOAA has contributed over $3 million to support over 50 habitat restoration projects in the Gulf of Mexico region through this partnership, encouraging nearly equal matching financial contributions from non-federal partners.
Request For Proposals
NOAA partners with the Gulf of Mexico Foundation to fund coastal projects benefitting critical fish habitats in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The applicant can be any community or organization operating on the Gulf coast or in the U.S. territories in the Caribbean. For projects on the Gulf coast, higher priority is given to those in areas designated as Gulf Ecological Management Sites (this does not apply to projects proposed for the U.S. territories in the Caribbean, as no such designations exist in these territories). Organizations that have project ideas should contact their local GEMS manager or NOAA field contacts to discuss components of the project. To apply for project funds under this RFP, contact the Gulf of Mexico Foundation.
