About the Pacific Salmon Watershed Fund
The Pacific Salmon Watershed Fund (PSWF) formed in
1998 to protect and restore watersheds in order to ensure
healthy, sustainable, natural populations of wild salmon
and productive salmon fisheries in the Pacific Northwest.
The PSWF was created by For the Sake of the Salmon (FSOS),
a regional organization based in Oregon whose mission
is to restore salmon populations to a sustainable and
productive level. The PSWF generates funds from electric
utility customer donations through the Salmon-Friendly
Power Habitat Restoration Program. Four private utility
companies, Portland General Electric, Green Mountain
Energy, Salem Electric Cooperative, and Pacific Power
participate in the Salmon-Friendly Power Program.
About the Partnership
The NOAA/Pacific Salmon Watershed Fund Habitat Restoration
Partnership began in 2002. During 2002 $100,000 of
NOAA funds were matched 2:1 by Pacific Salmon Watershed
Fund. As a result, ten restoration projects to enhance
salmonid habitat in Oregon were jointly funded by NOAA’s
Community-based Restoration Program, the Pacific Salmon
Watershed Fund, and the Oregon Watershed Enhancement
Board. These projects benefit salmon in Northwest Oregon
by enhancing riparian habitat and removing barriers
that block upstream migration. This partnership provided
a unique mechanism for local residents to contribute
directly to on-the-ground habitat restoration projects
through a cooperative effort with NOAA and the Oregon
Watershed Enhancement Board.
