People
for Salmon
About People for Salmon
People for Salmon (PFS) was founded in 1998 by the
Washington State Legislature as a partnership of citizen
groups, conservation organizations, industry, agriculture
and businesses. Their goal was to promote coordination
among different interests and develop a public outreach
and education program to encourage and stimulate the
use and participation of volunteers in salmon recovery.
PFS supported federal, state, tribal and local efforts
to restore salmon by providing unique tools and strategies
to improve on-the-ground benefits to salmon while cutting
costs and avoiding duplication.
About the Partnership
The NOAA/People for Salmon Habitat Restoration Partnership
was formed in 2001. Through the partnership, $197,450
of NOAA funds were matched 1:1 by People for Salmon
to conduct on-the-ground habitat restoration projects
to benefit salmon in the state of Washington. A total
of twelve restoration projects were implemented to restore
salmonid access to spawning and rearing habitat, improve
riparian conditions and enhance in-stream habitat. These
projects also aimed to improve community awareness and
stewardship by increasing volunteer participation in
local salmon habitat restoration efforts.
