About Salmon Corps (Earth Conservation Corps Northwest)
The Salmon Corps Earth Conservation Corp Northwest
program is a grassroots regional organization established
in 1994. The Salmon Corps mission is to energize young
Native American adults, ages 18 - 25, and actively engage
them in restoration projects that benefit salmonid habitats
in the Pacific Northwest. Salmon Corps' approach incorporates
tribal environmental knowledge, natural resources management
practices and science to rehabilitate the declining
salmon populations and reclaim members connections to
their community, history and rivers.
About the Partnership
The NOAA/Salmon Corps Habitat Restoration Partnership
began in 2001. During the first two years of the partnership,
$340,000 of NOAA funds were matched 1:1 by Salmon Corps
to conduct restoration projects aimed at benefitting
salmonid populations in the Pacific Northwest. Fourteen
projects within seven Tribal operating areas have been
implemented in Idaho, Washington, and Oregon to date.
Restoration activities include riparian planting, non-native
species removal, riparian fencing and streambank stabilization
along salmon-bearing streams. Salmon Corps and its Tribal
partners annually develop proposals and project plans
in consultation with NOAA’s Community-based Restoration
Program staff. This innovative partnership successfully
implements on-the-ground habitat restoration projects
while fostering Salmon Corps’ mission focused
on education and outreach in tribal communities.
