Seabird bycatch mitigation measures in RFMOs

Beginning in 2002, a number of regional fisheries management organizations (RFMOs) have adopted and updated measures to reduce incidental bycatch of seabirds in longline and trawl fisheries.

Below are links to the most recent versions (by year) of the binding conservation and management measures adopted by RFMOs to mitigate seabird bycatch. Also included are links to older measures that have been superseded and any relevant non-binding measures. 
 

Commission for the Conservation of Southern Bluefin Tuna (CCSBT)

2011 (nonbinding) Recommendation to mitigate the impact on ecologically related species of fishing for southern bluefin tuna.

                  Recommendation supersedes version from: 2008

 

Convention for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR)*

2012 Conservation Measure 25-02 on minimization of incidental mortality of seabirds in the course of longline fishing or longline fishing research in the Convention Area.

                  Measure 25-02 supersedes versions from: 2009, 2008, 2007, 2005, 2003, 2002


2011 Conservation Measure 25-03 on minimization of the incidental mortality of seabirds in the course of trawl fishing in the Convention Area.

                  Measure 25-03 supersedes versions from: 2009, 2003


2006 (nonbindinng) Resolution 22/XXV on international actions to reduce the incidental mortality of seabirds arising from fishing.

 

Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC)

2012 Resolution 12/06 on reducing incidental bycatch of seabirds in longline fisheries (entry into force July 1, 2014).

Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC)*

2011 Resolution C-11-02 to mitigate the impact on seabirds of fishing for species covered by the IATTC.

2011 Supplemental Recommendation on reducing incidental bycatch of seabirds in ICCAT longline fisheries.

South East Atlantic Fisheries Organization (SEAFO)

2012 Conservation Measure 25/12 on reducing incidental bycatch of seabirds in the SEAFO Convention Area.

South Pacific Regional Fisheries Management Organisation (SPRFMO)

2014 Conservation and Management Measure 2.04 for minimising bycatch of seabirds in the SPRFMO Convention Area.

 

Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC)*

2012 Conservation and Management Measure 2012-07 to mitigate the impact of fishing for highly migratory fish stocks on seabirds.

2005 (nonbinding) Resolution 2005-01 on the incidental catch of seabirds.

 

* RFMOs to which the United States is a member. The United States played a significant role in the adoption of international binding measures at these RFMOs to reduce seabird bycatch in international waters.
