ABSTRACT

The goal of
this project was to reduce user conflicts and foster cooperation
between commercial and recreational fishermen in the New
York Marine District. The educational campaign utilized
a variety of media resources and delivery approaches.
Over 5.5 million commercial fishermen, recreational fishermen,
and members of the general public were educated through
the print media, videos, public service announcements
on cable TV and radio, broadcast news, community affairs
talk shows, individual presentations, printed handouts,
and hands-on fishing trips. The results of this project
will be improved decision making, less hysteria based
on misinformation, and a reduction in user conflicts between
commercial and recreational fishermen.
