Ages and dates
of hatching of squid caught by the inshore summer and
offshore winter commercial fisheries were determined in
order to identify major spawning periods and to estimate
seasonal growth rates. The commercial samples were supplemented
by additional survey samples from inshore and offshore.
Squid were aged using a relationship relating age in days
to statolith dry weight and by counting growth increments
in the statolths. The resulting data can be used to improve
the existing squid fishery management plan (FMP), by allowing
development of seasonal and regional allocations of allowable
catch.
