ABSTRACT
This project
updated the Universal Product Code (UPC) Numbering System
to include shellfish and to assign codes for shellfish
species and market forms. Using the FDA's Seafood
List as a starting point, and with input from industry,
government, and the UPC Council, the grantees revised
two manuals, Retail Seafood Identity System,
a reference for fish species and their various product
forms, and Seafood Random Weight UPC Numbering System.
The revisions were necessary to incorporate shellfish
names and codes, and to address changes in Federal laws
and regulations since the initial publication of the manuals.
The updated manuals provide guidance to the seafood industry
on labeling shellfish products and provide retailers with
UPC designations for random weight shellfish products.
