MAFAC Meeting April 2001

Dear Dr. Baker:

At the October, 1999, meeting of the Marine Fisheries Advisory Committee (MAFAC) in Washington, D.C., you gave us the task of developing a comprehensive overview of the National Marine Fisheries Service, written from the constituent point of view. This has proved to be a challenge, involving many hours of work by our members and consuming most of our last meeting.

Nevertheless, I am pleased to present you with the enclosed document: A Perspective on the National Marine Fisheries Service: Issues and Recommendations. The document represents a consensus of views of MAFAC members of the problems and opportunities facing the National Marine Fisheries Service.

We would greatly appreciate your transmitting the document to the Presidential Transition Office in conjunction with other transition papers being supplied by the Department of Commerce. We hope that the document will be useful - and will be used - by the next administration.
