NOAA Partners with INTERPOL to Address Fisheries Crime Worldwide

"Partnering with INTERPOL on Project SCALE and its new Fisheries Crime Working Group is another tool NOAA can use to build cooperation in the global fight against illegal fishing and level the playing field for U.S. fishermen."

-Bruce Buckson, NOAA Enforcement

Seafood caught illegally is a serious and costly global problem affecting marine life and fishermen who follow the rules. NOAA's Office of Law Enforcement has been partnering with international police organization INTERPOL for many years and is now excited to help INTERPOL launch Project SCALE, a new initiative to detect, combat and suppress fisheries crime worldwide. Project SCALE is also designed to improve the exchange of fisheries enforcement information and intelligence between countries.

Stopping illegal fishing, and the sales of those products here in the United States and elsewhere, is one of NOAA’s top priorities. The United States imports 91 percent of its seafood, making it a very attractive market for illegal, unreported and unregulated fishery products. The sales of this illegally caught seafood in the United States put our fishermen who follow the rules at a real disadvantage in the marketplace.

Partnering with INTERPOL on Project SCALE and its new Fisheries Crime Working Group is another tool NOAA can use to build cooperation in the global fight against illegal fishing and level the playing field for U.S. fishermen.

NOAA Law Enforcement will continue to support INTERPOL through staffing and expertise, including serving as vice chair of the new Fisheries Crime Working Group. This group will bolster international cooperation in the global fight against illegal fishing and raise awareness of the negative impacts of fisheries crime on oceans and U.S. fishing communities.
