Laws - Protecting Fish and Fish Habitat

There are many ways in which fish and their habitat can be adversely impacted. The Office for Law Enforcement works closely with its sister agency, NOAA Fisheries Office of Habitat Conservation in relation to issues of habitat destruction or altercation. Although a majority of habitat issues deal with ESA-listed salmon in California, Oregon and Washington, other issues such as seal haul-outs, sanctuaries and estuaries are areas of concern for the OLE.

The graph below provides a short list of subject areas in which certain activities may lead to a violation under Section 9 of the Endangered Species Act. Each topic of interest is linked to a list of laws which may apply. For more information, contact the agency responsible for enforcing that particular law directly.
