NOAA Fisheries Announces Immediate Steps to Address Recommendations from Independent New England Fishery Management Review and National Science Report
On April 26, 2011, at the New England Fishery Management Council meeting in Mystic, CT, NOAA’s Assistant Administrator for Fisheries, Eric Schwaab, announced the specific steps the agency will take in response to the initial results and recommendations from an independent review of the fishery management process in New England. He also opened an informal 30-day public comment period on the report – A Review of the New England Fishery Management Process. The deadline for public comments was May 27, 2011. Information on the New England Fishery Management Review
Released on April 26, 2011, A Review of the New England Fishery Management Process is the first phase of a regional assessment and management review focused on the relationships among the New England Fishery Management Council, NOAA Fisheries’ Northeast Regional Office, and NOAA Fisheries’ Northeast Fisheries Science Center and the external factors influencing the process. The results of the review, which were presented by Preston Pate at the New England Fishery Management Council Meeting, included recommendations to improve New England’s fishery management processes.

Information on Science Enterprise Review
In response to a request by the NOAA Research Council, NOAA Fisheries contracted with two nationally-known fishery scientists in 2009 to conduct a national review of the agency’s science programs and make recommendations to the agency. The review and recommendations by Dr. Michael Sissenwine and Dr. Brian Rothschild are presented in the report Building Capacity of the NMFS Science Enterprise. The report was released to the public at the New England Fishery Management Council meeting on April 26, 2011.
