Summer Flounder Sea Turtle Protection Area Map and GIS Data

To protect sea turtles, summer flounder trawlers in waters off Virginia (south of Cape Charles) and North Carolina must use an approved Turtle Excluder Device (TED) installed in a TED extension (a cylinder of webbing in which the TED is installed), constructed of webbing no larger than 3.5 inch (8.9 cm) stretched mesh. Trawlers north of 35°46.1′ N. lat. (Oregon Inlet, NC) are exempt from this requirement from January 15 through March 15 each year.
