NSIL Risk Assessment Activities

  • Mercury in Fish issues
  • Developed a “Risk Potential Index” to classify fishery products by microbial risk
  • Participates on the Joint Subcommittee on Aquaculture regarding aquatic animal health
  • Participates in the Shrimp Virus Peer Reviews and Risk Assessment Workshops
  • Provides assistance to FDA with data transfer, technical reviews, and comments on their Risk Assessment of the Public Health Impact of Vibrio parahaemolyticus in Raw Molluscan Shellfish
  • Participates on the Policy and Technical Committees of the Federal Interagency Risk Assessment Consortium
  • Participates in various Risk Assessment activities of the National Advisory Committee for Microbiological Criteria for Foods
  • Participates in various Interstate Shellfish Sanitation Conference activities to assess the risk of Vibrios in shellfish
  • Participated in the review of the FDA/USDA Draft relative to Risk Assessment from foodborne Listeria monocytogenes among selected categories of ready-to-eat foods
  • Participated in risk evaluations of seafood products such as:
    • vacuum/modified atmosphere packed fisheries products
    • re-use of waters for thawing of frozen tuna and shrimp
    • cooked shrimp processing procedures
    • investigation of consumer illness complaints
    • dioxin in catfish feeds
    • other concerns of constituents
