Activity:BYCATCH/INCIDENTAL HARVEST RESEARCH [Sec. 206]: Establish a bycatch reduction

program to develop devices to minimize bycatch mortality, and evaluate ecological impacts,

benefits and costs and practicality of devices

Product (s):Program in place. Effective bycatch reduction devices (BRDs) have been developed.

Testing on alternative designs continues. Results of programs will be provided in

Report to Congress under item N-10.04.

Overview and scope of task and sub-tasks:

CompletedA. Over 92 BRD designs have been tested. Several BRDs have proven effective in

meeting target bycatch reduction criteria established in respective shrimp FMP

amendments for Gulf and South Atlantic. RIRs for these amendments address

cost/benefit aspects of BRDs. Some analysis of ecological impacts of bycatch reduction

has been completed. Testing on alternative designs continues.
