NOAA Fisheries Reminds Fishermen about Federal Smoothhound Shark Permit Requirements

Amendment 9 to the 2006 Consolidated Highly Migratory Species (HMS) Fishery Management Plan (FMP) became effective on March 15, 2016

Amendment 9 requires fishermen that fish commercially for smooth dogfish in Federal waters to have an open access Federal smoothhound shark permit.  Contact the Southeast Regional Office Permit Office at 877-376-4877 if you need this permit. 

Smoothhound shark permit holders may only sell catch to federally permitted shark dealers.

Federally-permitted smoothhound shark fishermen may remove the fins of smooth dogfish at sea if:

If those conditions do not apply, fishermen may still retain smooth dogfish, but the fins must remain naturally attached to the carcass through offloading.
