Pelagic Longline Fishery – Bluefin Tuna Accounting; Notification that the Individual Bluefin Quota (IBQ) On-Line System is Up and Running

Posted: September 29, 2017

NOAA’s National Marine Fisheries Service (NOAA Fisheries) is notifying the public that the on-line Individual Bluefin Quota (IBQ) accounting system (System) is now up and running, and must be used to account for bluefin tuna retained or discarded dead.

Atlantic tunas Longline category vessel owners/operators: As of September 29, 2017, for any pelagic longline trip currently underway, and future pelagic longline trips you must, at the end of the trip, coordinate with the Atlantic tunas dealer to report bluefin tuna retained or discarded dead, in the on-line IBQ system.  However, on Sunday, October 1, the system will be unavailable temporarily (from 9 AM to 5 PM) to repair equipment damaged during hurricane Irma. Also, continue to report all bluefin tuna caught through the Vessel Monitoring System (VMS) unit as required (at the end of each pelagic longline set).

Atlantic tunas DealersAs of September 29, 2017, dealers will again be required to report bluefin tuna retained or discarded dead from pelagic longline vessels, using the on-line IBQ system.  However, on Suday October 1, the system will be unavailable temporarily (from 9 AM to 5 PM) to repair equipment damaged during hurricane Irma.

As a reminder, for vessels that landed bluefin tuna prior to IBQ system restoration when the dealer was not able to enter the bluefin tuna data into the IBQ system, or if you land bluefin on Sunday, October 1, from 9 AM to 5 PM, NMFS will enter that information into the system and account for bluefin tuna using IBQ (based upon the dealer and VMS data).

This notice is a courtesy to fishery participants to help keep you informed about the fishery. For further information, contact the IBQ Customer Service Line (301) 427-8591.  This information will also be posted on the HMS website at: http://www.nmfs.noaa.gov/sfa/hms.
