The
starshell astraea is an herbivorous, bottom-dwelling gastropod of
the Caribbean Sea, with close relatives in warm waters around the
world. They are also often seen in home aquariums. They are members
of a family commonly known as turban snails because of the shape
of their hard conical shells, and come in many colors and sizes
up to six inches in length. Like land-dwelling snails, sea snails
build their home in chambers as they grow and use it as armor against
predators such as fish, sea stars, and crustaceans.
